Bostock Band was formed some 12 years ago by Jo Curry and Claire Powlson to provide an opportunity for school leavers to continue their brass band experience. The band began practising at the former Bostock Social Club, now The Hayhurst Arms,in Bostock Green.
Over the last 12 years more adults as well as young people have joined and the band has gone from strength to strength in the local area, due to the high calibre of its performances and the wonderful spirit of inclusion found in the band. Ages now range from 11 to 84 and everything in between, and this in itself provides uplifting social interaction for all concerned, be it teenagers mixing and learning from older generations, or the older members of the team feeling enlivened by the energy of the younger band members. To the best of our knowledge, there are not many groups in the area where this socialising is found, and all for a modest annual subscription of £30, which is key to being an accessible activity. The band currently provides all sheet music and larger instruments for the band members, money being raised through concerts, charitable events, community celebrations, church services and a small amount of sponsorship in the local community
Playing in the band gives confidence to all concerned, and particularly to the younger members, who are able to engage in conversation, with various adults and on various topics; all essential life lessons. Band members, and particularly the younger members, are encouraged to progress with their playing and this is celebrated and supported by the band in an annual awards ceremony. Everybody has an important role to play to make the whole thing come together, and this is recognised and valued.
